FAT HISTORY MONTH

Jeff and Bobby wring out fragile epics. They spin tales of love, failure, the city, and the desert over jerky riffs and percussive crescendos. Desperation and hope are choked, belted, confessed over sluggish country nods, and it sounds like its all falling apart. Delicate fingerpicking and cymbal work languidly crawl around and erupt into explosive releases… relentlessly. Their songs are strained yet convulsive, like the tumbleweed hanging on by its gnarled roots to the lonely cactus until its caught in the wayward prairie wind. You’ll watch it roll along picking up dust into the distance. It’ll never stop. It’s gut wrenching as all hell.

GLOAMING- Burlington, VT

Disclaimer from Cayla: I may be biased, since this band is comprised of three friends of mine on whom I have perpetual friend-crushes. But in an ideal world, Gloaming would be following behind me playing a personal soundtrack every time I did something extremely epic- getting lost in the woods at night in the winter, rescuing children from a burning building in slow motion, sobbing at the wheel over lost love on a long road trip.

A heavy gazey cloak encircles you as the trio incorporates a bit of a dark performance aspect to their shows (including a signature scream), inviting the audience to draw closer like sailors to the sirens and leave with more questions than answers. The Gloamers can be found skinning rabbits, pondering fate and collecting mysteries in their downtime.

If you like: that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when the rollercoaster drops or when you find out the twist at the end of the movie, magical potions, sea creatures.

A voice. A face. A hand, with fingers. A brain. Another hand, also with fingers. A person. Larry Wish (seated at drums, with yellow shirt. [His Guys, unfortunately, will not be accompanying him on his trip to Winooski]).
He comes from Minnesota to play for us this upcoming Saturday. He will have a microphone and a CD player. With these devices, and the pieces of his own anatomy described above, he will entertain us with pop songs that he writes and performs in front of audiences.

With an award- winning television show and over 25 albums under his belt, Larry has been in the process of creating an entire world with his music. This world is strange and sometimes disturbing, but in ways that make us realize the true instability of our own universe, like “Slingblade” or “Bad Boy Bubby” if either were written by the creative team of Phillip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, and Tim A. Eric. But Larry Wish is one person. And he is coming up here on a bus this Wednesday. And he will be performing on Saturday evening.

This year at Waking Windows, Whose Loofah? and Wax Mice will be going head-to-head in the musical equivalent of a late-night pillow fight, feathers and all. You may fondly remember Becca and Max from their stint as Burlington’s most verbose pop duo, Spacemen Saturday Night. Over the band’s year-long hiatus, both members have been perfecting their solo craft, cultivating their own sides of the sonic Venn diagram.

But now it’s time for a showdown, and both artists are bringing in the big guns. Word is, Loofah’s drafted the drummer from Nashville’s Gnarwhal, while Waxy is recruiting the members of Toy Boat to back up his own anthemic crescendos.

And what, you might worry, will be the outcome of such a marvelous clash of minds? No one can say, but if all goes well, maybe we can hope for a full-scale fusion of a bigger, better Spacemen, the likes of which have never been seen. At the very least, you’ll shake your booty and maybe even shed a tear or two.
